This is a process and the Board is made up of faculty. This is not their only responsibility.
All questions and all documents should be sent to irb@asburyseminary.edu.
Prior to applying
Do not schedule dates to begin your research interviews etc. The IRB process takes at a minimum 30-60 days for exempt or expedited reviews and a minimum of 90 days for a full Board review.
Gather all your documents to be used in your research to help you complete your application.
Informed Consent Letter (as adapted for your project)
Questionnaires, surveys, interview or focus group questions
Permission Letters
Any additional supporting documents you may be submitting with your application (e.g., confidentiality agreement)
Be sure you have all the approvals and process for your program and the approval of your mentor/advisor before applying.
Take the human subjects research training and download your certificate of completion as a PDF.
Application Process
Fill out application
Be sure to follow the stated directions.
Have all supporting documentation ready to submit electronically:
Informed Consent Letter (as adapted for your project)
Questionnaires, surveys, interview or focus group questions
Permission Letters
Any additional supporting documents you may be submitting with your application (e.g., confidentiality agreement)
Submit documentation via email irb@asburyseminary.edu
After Application
You will be e-mailed a copy of your application
• You will receive an acknowledgement email upon receipt of your supporting documentation.
The Board will review your application and supporting documents. If there are questions, clarifications, or changes, these will be emailed to you.
After minor changes, clarifications and questions are answered the Board will review these.
After all changes, clarifications and questions are completed, the Board will vote and the applicant will be notified of the vote.
After Approval
Approved application with signature and approval date returned to applicant via email.
Applicant may begin research as directed by their program
There will be periodic report required (every six months) as required by law that will be emailed to you for completion and return to irb@asburyseminary.edu.
In order for your IRB application to be approved, you will need to complete the Protecting Human Research Participants Course using the link below. This training is an important part of the research process. It has been created to help researchers to have an awareness and knowledge regarding ethics in the research process and provides a foundation for appropriate conduct during field research.
This course is free, and was created for individuals at Asbury Theological Seminary.
Please send a PDF of your Quiz grades (which can be found under Grades) to the IRB (irb@asburyseminary.edu) as documentation that you have completed the course.
Please be certain to fill in and customize the templates to meet the needs of your research prior to submitting to the IRB.

This will allow you time to formulate and proofread your responses.

After Application

The Board will review your application and supporting documents. If there are questions, clarifications, or changes, these will be emailed to you. Responses should be emailed in a separate word document.
After changes, clarifications and questions are answered the Board will review these.
The previous two (2) steps may be repeated as many times as necessary.
After all changes, clarifications and questions are completed, the Board will vote and the applicant notified of the vote.
After Approval

This course is free, but can take a substantial amount of time. You are able to save your work part way through. Be sure to remember the required user name and password.
You will receive a Certificate of Completion that includes the date completed and an assigned number. Please save this in pdf format for submission.
Please be certain to fill in and customize the informed consent letters to meet the needs of your research prior to submitting to the IRB.
This document is a reflection on you, so please be careful to proofread your work.
