Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Welcome

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Asbury Theological Seminary is an administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research participants in research activities conducted under the auspices of the institution with which it is affiliated.

  • The IRB is charged with the responsibility of reviewing all research (whether funded or not) involving human participants prior to the initiation of the research. The IRB is concerned with protecting the welfare, rights, and privacy of human participantss.
  • The IRB has the authority to approve, disapprove, monitor, and require modifications in all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction as specified by both the federal regulations and institutional policy.
  • Any student, staff member, or faculty member conducting research involving human participants is required to complete an application successfully and receive approval through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to conducting any portion of the research activities.
  • If a student, staff member, or faculty member conducts research for ATS involving participants at other institutions, ATS will be designated as the IRB of Record, and the ATS researcher will abide by the IRB requirements of the participating institutions.
  • If a researcher at another institution desires to invite students, staff members, or faculty members from ATS to be participants in his/her research, the researcher requests permission from the ATS Provost’s office to conduct the research. The Provost’s office will determine whether or not the research is appropriate for participation of ATS community members. If approved, the researcher completes the IRB Authorization Agreement. The ATS IRB would then conduct an Expedited Review of the research, unless there are indicators for a Full Board Review.
