Making the Most of Technology in Your Course

Created to assist faculty in preparing for potential or definite course transitions to online during the Fall 2020 term (due to the COVID-19 epidemic).

Managing Deadlines and Student Access

  1. Due: You may specify a due date in this text field by clicking on the calendar icon to the right and selecting a date. This will create a deadline in the Canvas Calendar for students. If a student submits an assignment past the due date, a “Late” submission notification will appear when you are grading the assignment in Canvas. However, students may still submit past the due date.

  2. Available from: You may specify a date that you wish students to be able to access the assignment in this text field by clicking on the calendar icon to the right and selecting a date. Note that students will not be able to submit prior to the date specified in this text field.

  3. Available until: You may specify a date that you wish to restrict student submissions in this text field by clicking on the calendar icon to the right and selecting a date. This allows for a more restrictive due date if you are not accepting submissions past a certain date.

Student Access: students have access to the online classroom starting from the first day of the semester. They will be able to participate in the course until the last day of the semester (please check the Academic Calendar to determine these dates). This means that students will not be able to submit any assignments or take any quizzes past the last day of the semester.

They will have readable access to the online course after the end of the semester, with one important caveat: while students can view feedback on their papers (assignments) through readable access, they will not be able to view feedback on any exams/quizzes. Keep this in mind when setting deadlines for exams/quizzes; you may wish to consider making the deadline earlier to allow some time for grading, and then some time for students to view feedback before the end of the semester deadline.
